Boiling water guide

There are really only four key manufacturers in this area:

Quooker

We have to say that we think this is one of the cleverest new products on the market today. The Quooker boiling water tap is one of those rare 'must haves'. This simple, ultra-safe idea immediately renders kettles out of date and is a favourite amongst chefs, celebrities and consumers alike. The Quooker instantly dispenses water that is purified, freshly boiled and rich in oxygen. Tea scum and dark skin are a thing of the past. You can be sure to serve your guests top-quality tea, after all, only truly boiling water is good enough for the perfect cup of English tea.

And herein is their key feature... it is is the only boiling water tap in the world that dispenses water at 100°C making the applications of the Quooker endless. The most obvious one is making the perfect cup of tea and the latest addition to the list is poaching fish. Of course you can also blanch vegetables, easily clean dirty pots and pans, make coffee, prepare baby formula, sterilise baby teats/equipment, peel tomatoes and much more. And all done in a moment!

As one might expect from a modern kitchen appliance, the Quooker is very energy-efficient. Because you can use the exact amount of water you need, no water is wasted. Thanks to its patented high vacuum insulation, the Quooker VAQ’s standby consumption is no more than 3 pence a day. Another attraction is the fact that the tap comes in 4 stylish designs to complement your existing tap and is height adjustable from filling a simple teacup to a tall pasta pan.

Zip Hydrotap

Zip were the first to launch an instant boiling water system during the 1980s and it became an instant success. It rapidly replaced power-hungry kettles and urns anywhere that people made tea and coffee – in offices, factories, canteens and restaurants and can be seen sampled at Sydney Opera House and 10 Downing Street. Their key feature in our opinion is their distinctive tall tap that provides instantly filtered boiling water for tea, coffee and cooking and their dual tap which can provide both filtered boiling water as well as filtered chilled drinking water from a single tap. It comes with a child-proof safety lock to prevent accidental use and the water temperature it dispenses at is 96°C. Very energy efficient compared to the simple kettle and urn. However pricing of their Hydrotap is top of the range starting at: £2,000 for the boiling water version and £2,500 for the boiling/chilled version. They also have an extensive range of products for commercial and industrial use.

InSinkerator Steaming Hot Water Tap

The InSinkerator comes in two models, the GN1100 offering steaming hot water instantly and the HC1100 hot and cold filtered water instantly through 2 touch lever dispensers. Its key feature is that it dispenses the hot water at a steaming 98°C and is very easy to fit. Available in three tap designs: victorian, country and contemporary and with single or dual levers, it has a swivelling spout and is available in 12 finishes. It offers similar energy saving advantages to the above brands and can deliver approximately 100 cups of 98° hot water per hour, using less energy than a 40 Watt light bulb. Expect to pay around £350 for the GN1100 and £450 for the HC1100.

Franke Little Butler Hot Water Tap

Franke offer two hot water tap versions, the Little Butler 1000 and Little Butler 2000, both a good value for money alternative to the previous boiling water taps although it does not technically offer ‘boiling’ water but “near boiling” water.

The Little Butler 1000 is a stand-alone tap that dispenses near-boiling water (88°C) for hot drinks and cooking, eliminating the need to boil the kettle every time hot water is required, and produces up to 60 cups of hot water an hour. The Little Butler 2000 offers all the features of the Little Butler 1000 but with 2 levers and has the added advantage of an easily accessible, adjustable thermostat and compact stainless steel heating unit compatible with standard kitchen cabinetry, dispensing filtered near-boiling water and filtered cold but not chilled drinking water.

Expect to pay around £400 for the LB1000 and £600 for the LB2000.
